Know Your Waters
Why the Best Freight Brokers Don't Try to Swim Everywhere
The Cargo Shark Team••2 min read
If you happen to know a thing or two about sharks, you're probably aware of the fact that they don't randomly wander the ocean hoping to bump into lunch.
Tiger sharks prefer certain coastlines. Hammerheads gather in specific regions. Reef sharks know every coral formation like it's their neighborhood grocery store.
Even the mighty Great White doesn't wake up one morning and think, "You know what? Let's see what's happening in the Arctic today."
They know their waters. The best freight brokers do too.
One of the biggest misconceptions in logistics is that every lane is just a road connecting Point A to Point B. On paper, shipping produce from California to Texas doesn't seem all that different from hauling automotive parts from Michigan to Alabama.
A truck is a truck, right? Not quite.
Every market has its own personality.
Florida behaves differently than the Midwest. The Northeast has its own rhythm. Produce season transforms entire regions overnight. Manufacturing hubs move to different schedules than retail distribution centers, and ports operate by rules that seem to have been written by people who genuinely enjoy paperwork.
To an outsider, freight looks like organized transportation. To an experienced broker, it's more like learning dozens of different languages. That's why specialization matters. A broker who knows a market inside and out understands far more than mileage and rates. They know which lanes tighten during harvest season, where capacity disappears after a holiday weekend, which receivers are famous for long unload times, and which routes can turn a profitable load into an expensive lesson.
That knowledge doesn't come from software. It comes from experience. From running the same markets over and over until patterns start revealing themselves.
The funny thing is, in sales we're often told to "cast a wider net." There's certainly value in expanding your reach. But there's also value in becoming the person everyone calls when they have that lane.
The refrigerated expert. The Southeast specialist. The Midwest manufacturing guru. The broker who knows Chicago better than their own backyard.
Because when customers face a difficult shipment, they rarely ask, "Who's available?"
They ask, "Who actually knows this market?"
At Cargo Sharks, we believe expertise beats geography every time. We'd rather know a handful of markets exceptionally well than pretend to be experts in every freight lane across North America. When you understand the nuances of a region - the seasonal trends, the carrier networks, the bottlenecks, and the opportunities - you stop reacting to the market and start anticipating it.
That's when you're no longer just booking trucks. You're creating solutions.
The ocean is enormous. No shark rules all of it. The smartest ones don't try.
They master the waters they know, and they become impossible to compete with there.
In logistics, that's where real opportunity lives - not in being everywhere, but in being the expert where it matters most.
